There’s one feature I HATE on smartphones. Every time I install a new app, I make sure to turn off all notifications. If I don’t do that, then I’m going to be a zombie checking my phone every few minutes.
Lets just say that push notifications work REALLY well. Think about it. Whenever your phone buzzes, it gets your attention. And here’s the good news!
You can utilize this same push technology in your affiliate marketing campaigns by using Web browser push notifications.
Imagine having the power to send previous visitors of your landing page to any offer you want. With browser “push” notifications, you have that power. The ability to “push” is relatively new to browsers. I started seeing them pop up on blogs around two years ago. I use it for this blog and have several thousand subscribers. Anytime I have a new blog post, I “push” it to you guys on Chrome, and like magic, I get several hundred people clicking.
Cool, right? It’s kinda like having a second email list.
A few years ago I also started noticing more and more affiliates using them on their landing pages. I’ve used them in my own affiliate campaigns and realized that this is a REALLY easy way to increase revenue.
Affiliate marketing is all about getting those tiny “edges.” They start adding up.
In this post, I’m going to break down the what, why, and how of push technology so that you can use it in your affiliate campaigns.
What is Push Technology?
Let’s make sure we’re on the same page about push technology. It basically works like this.
- A visitor comes to your website/landing page and sees a popup asking if they want to receive notifications from your site.
- They click “Yes” and are added to your contact list.
- You can then send them notifications any time you want.
It’s kind of like building an email list without some of the headaches. You don’t have to create an opt-in form since third-party software like PushCrew (which I use) automatically creates the popup. And you don’t have to create any sort of lead magnet since they’re simply opting into notifications. It’s a really simple way to build a contact list.
Every push notification has three basic elements:
- The text – This is simply the message that accompanies the notification. So, if I send out a notification about a new blog post, the text will be a title and short summary.
- The image – Notifications can have images associated with them. I use the same image for everyone (my profile pic), but you can change it up if you want to (I like to keep things simple).
- The link – The point of notifications is to drive traffic to specific pages. Every notification has a link associated with it.
Do Push Notifications Really Work?
Yes, they do. They work really well, in fact.
While there isn’t a lot of data out there regarding web push notifications, there has been a ton of research on the effectiveness of mobile app push notifications.
The average opt-in rate? 53.3%. When you compare that to the average email opt-in rate (2%), it’s pretty clear that push notifications are legit.
The open rate of notifications can be anywhere from 3%-8%. While this may not seem that high, when you combine it with the insanely high opt-in rate, you have a seriously powerful marketing tool. If you have a list of 10,000 people and 8.8% click on a notification, that’s 880 visitors to your landing page.
Using Push Notifications In Affiliate Marketing
So how can you use push notifications in your affiliate campaigns?
Normally, you send paid traffic to a landing page that has a single offer, and only people who are interested in that exact offer will convert. Push notifications completely change the game.
Let’s say you’re promoting a dating offer, and you install push technology on your landing page. Your overall contact list grows as you’re promoting that one offer. Have another offer you want to promote? Send a push notification with the link to the landing page.
Suddenly, a flood of “free” earned traffic is seeing your offer, and because they already know who you are, they’re more likely to convert.
Let’s say you have a list of 10,000, and your push notification CTR is 10%. With each push…
- 1,000 people see your landing page
- 25% go to the offer page (250 people)
- 10% conversion rate, at $5 an offer.
That’s $125 with a single push notification and a pretty small list. Imagine if your contact list was 500,000 people.
A couple quick words of advice though:
- Don’t spam. Once per day is probably about right.
- VARY your messaging. Don’t use the same phrases over and over.
Basically, just use common sense. Would you want to be spammed by push notifications? Of course not. So don’t spam others.
There’s a lot of copy and pasting going on in affiliate marketing. People are ripping each others landing pages, and they sometimes run the same offer. If you have something like “push” installed, it can give you an additional revenue edge.
More profit margins mean you can outbid them.
The Cost Of The Push
When it comes to pricing, I’ve got good news and bad news.
