Over the last decade, affiliate marketing has evolved from a niche traffic industry into a global business ecosystem with international teams, analytics departments, call centers, and long-term brand partnerships.

One of the entrepreneurs actively involved in this transformation is Alexander Grossu, owner of the affiliate network M1.top.

Originally from Chisinau, Moldova, Grossu started his career in e-commerce before moving deeper into affiliate marketing and building M1.top into an international affiliate network focused on the European and Latin American markets.

Today, M1.top works with more than 100 advertisers and over 400 affiliates across more than 10 countries.

From Selling Dashcams to Building an Affiliate Business

Like many entrepreneurs in the early 2010s, Alexander Grossu entered online business through e-commerce.

After university, he launched a small online store where he sold car dashcams, phone accessories, and consumer electronics imported from China.

At the beginning, sales were relatively small — around 10 to 15 orders per day. Everything was handled manually: product sourcing, advertising, website management, and customer communication.

The turning point came when Grossu discovered affiliate marketing.

At the time, M1.top operated under the M1Shop brand. After placing his products on the platform, the business scaled rapidly.

“On the first day, we received around 300 orders. Before that, our volumes were completely different,” Grossu recalls.

Seeing the potential of the affiliate model, he borrowed around $10,000 to purchase additional inventory and aggressively scale the business.

Soon, sales of dashcams alone reached approximately 150 units per day.

Building Infrastructure Instead of Chasing Fast Growth

As the business expanded, Grossu built his own call center in Moldova to support the COD (Cash on Delivery) sales model.

At its peak, the operation employed around 80 call center agents.

According to Alexander Grossu, one of the biggest misconceptions about affiliate marketing is that the industry is only about buying traffic.

“In reality, affiliate marketing becomes a serious operational business once you start scaling,” says the M1.top owner.

Today, large affiliate networks require:

  • analytics teams;
  • quality control systems;
  • advertiser support;
  • affiliate management;
  • compliance monitoring;
  • customer retention processes.

Why Traffic Quality Matters More Than Ever

According to Alexander Grossu, one of the biggest challenges in affiliate marketing today is traffic quality.

Many affiliates launch dozens of advertising campaigns simultaneously, and not all creatives meet advertiser standards.

As a result, affiliate networks increasingly invest in moderation and analytics departments that monitor ad quality and user complaints.

“If traffic quality drops, everybody loses — the advertiser, the customer, and eventually the affiliate network itself,” Grossu explains.

Because of this, M1.top focuses not only on traffic volume but also on maintaining product quality and sustainable long-term relationships with advertisers.

The Rise of Subscription Models and Influencer Marketing

Grossu believes the affiliate industry will continue evolving toward long-term business models over the next several years.

One of the biggest trends is subscription-based commerce.

Instead of selling products only once, companies increasingly focus on recurring customer relationships and subscription programs.

“This model has already become mainstream in the US, and now we see the same trend moving into Europe,” says Alexander Grossu, owner of M1.top.

Another major shift is the rapid growth of influencer marketing.

Advertising budgets are increasingly moving toward creators, TikTok content, short-form videos, and creator-driven commerce.

According to Grossu, affiliate marketing is becoming significantly more professional and brand-oriented than it was five years ago.

How Affiliate Networks Actually Work

According to Alexander Grossu, most affiliate networks are built around two core directions.

The first side is affiliate acquisition and management — working with webmasters and traffic partners who generate sales.

The second side is advertiser relations — helping brands scale customer acquisition through affiliate marketing.

The affiliate network itself acts as infrastructure between these two sides of the market.

“The stronger your affiliates, advertisers, analytics, and traffic quality are, the stronger the network becomes,” Grossu explains.
