A BrightEdge analysis cited by Business Insider claims Google’s AI summaries surface negative brand framing more often than ChatGPT, which raises the stakes for brand reputation inside AI answers. The practical risk is that controversy narratives get amplified at the top of the funnel.
A BrightEdge report covered by Business Insider claims Google’s AI Overviews are more likely to surface negative brand sentiment than ChatGPT. The delta is not huge in absolute terms, but it is meaningful at Google scale. BrightEdge’s analysis, based on millions of queries and interactions from mid-January through February 2026, found negative brand sentiment at about 2.3 percent for Google AI Overviews versus 1.6 percent for ChatGPT, and described Google as 44 percent more likely to show negative sentiment.
Why this matters for marketing is obvious: classic Search is mostly neutral plumbing. Generative answers behave more like an editor, sometimes summarizing controversies, legal disputes, customer backlash, or product limitations as the “headline.” The report suggests negative sentiment tends to spike when brands have public issues, and it also warns that generative systems can echo older narratives for longer than a brand’s comms team expects.
Google disputed the framing, arguing the difference is small and that the outputs reflect web content. Still, the takeaway for operators is that “GEO” is not only about visibility. It is also about reputation control inside AI answers: keeping official pages current, publishing clean docs and updates, and actively managing review ecosystems so the model has fresh, high-trust signals to pull from.
