The American record label Warner Music Group (WMG) and the popular AI music generation platform Suno have announced a licensed partnership, effectively resolving a prolonged dispute over copyright infringement.

This agreement establishes a new standard for how the music industry interacts with generative AI. However, for platform users, it introduces significant new limitations.

What Changes for Suno Users:

  • New Licensed Models: “New, licensed AI models” will be released, replacing the older versions of Suno.

  • Free Tier Restriction: Music generated on the free tier can no longer be downloaded; tracks are limited to streaming and sharing.

  • Paid Subscriber Limits: Paid subscribers will be granted a limited number of monthly downloads, with an option to purchase additional downloads.

  • Content Review: User-generated content created previously using the “old” models may be subject to review, with both companies planning to remove it from public access.

What the Label Provides to Artists

Under the terms of the agreement, artists and rights holders who have signed the licensing deal gain control over how their names, likenesses, voices, and compositions are utilized when creating music through Suno.

This development potentially unlocks a new monetization stream for musicians—both from their classic catalog and from newly generated AI tracks.

The Path Forward

WMG and Suno have stated that the licensed platform models will be operational in 2026. Suno’s acquisition of Songkick—a service for finding concerts and selling tickets—further emphasizes the companies’ commitment to integrating AI-generated music into the established artist-fan ecosystem.

This agreement sets a crucial precedent: instead of engaging in prolonged legal battles against AI music generation, major labels are opting for the path of licensing and control. For Suno users, this marks the end of unrestricted “free” generation and downloading; for the music industry, it is a significant step toward maintaining control over content, regardless of whether it is human or AI-generated.
