In this article, you are going to tell you everything there is to know about the AWE 2019. In fact, we will be your guide and personal assistant to Barcelona and back. This article is for everyone interested in expanding their horizons, be you a novice or expert.

It is advisable to travel 2-3 days before the event to get yourself settled in. This may also give you the opportunity to meet with other attendees, partners, or speakers before the event. You will have enough time to adjust if you meet unpleasant circumstances.

Preparations for your trip

Of course, before any event, you have to make some preparations. You need to do some research about the place you will be visiting. Especially if it is your first time. This AWE 2019 will be held in Barcelona, Spain. Like every other large city in Europe, you should expect to encounter heavy traffic and pickpocketing. The natives of this city speak Catalan besides Spanish. At this time of the year, it will be hot in Barcelona at about 27°C (81°F) in the day and 19°C (66°F) at night. So, pack your clothes accordingly. You will notice that the beaches are sometimes crowded and their food is amazing.

If you are traveling from outside of the EU, then you need to get a visa. Since Barcelona in the EU, all Schengen visas will be accepted.

If you have never made a trip to Barcelona before, then we suggest that you check out the map of major airline carrier hubs. You will be able to book your flight from there. You can also travel by train if you are from a nearby country like the Netherlands, Portugal, France, and Italy.

Where to stay

It is advisable to pick a place closer to the event location. This is because Barcelona is very large and you will not want to be stuck in traffic on the day of the event. So, here are some of our recommendations:

  • Hotel Parallel: This hotel located on Barcelona’s Avenida Paralelo, which is a 10-minute drive from Plaza Catalunya. It also gives you easy access to Montjuïc, where you can have lots of fun.
  • Ayre Hotel Gran Via: This is a 4 star rated hotel very close to Fira de Barcelona just a few minutes walk to the Plaza de España.
  • Crowne Plaza Barcelona - Fira Center: Located about 200 m from Barcelona’s Magic Fountain, this hotel offers very good services and spacious rooms.
  • Hotel Acta Azul Barcelona: This hotel is located on Barcelona’s Gran Vía Avenue, not far from Plaza España and the Fira de Barcelona exhibition center. Its reception is available 24 hours a day.
  • Evenia Rocafort: This hotel is found in a strategic area of the city. It is not far from the park and the exhibition site of Montjuic and various points of tourist-cultural interest.

If you prefer making your reservation alone, then we suggest that apps like Airbnb or Booking.com.

Moving around the city

While in the city, you will need to move around. There are many options available for you. You just need to select the one which is comfortable. For taxis, you have options such as Uber which just came back to Barcelona after three years of absence. It is should be your first choice for fast and easy transportation, MyTaxi is used mostly by locals, so, I guess it is a cheaper choice. It is actually like Uber but has been integrated with local taxis. Cabify is one of Uber’s greatest competition, so, I guess they will have lower rates. The traditional taxi is the most expensive of all and you find around on stops and going around town. eCooltra – Scooter Rental is also available if you want to jump from one place to another faster.

Metro and bus are the public way of transport:

  • single tickets for €2.20 - one-way,
  • T10 pass (10 one-way) for €10.20 which saves you about 50%,
  • Hola BCN Travelcards offer unlimited bus/metro travel, the Barcelona card gives you options to make trips and check out tourist attractions.

Exchange currency

Once you arrive in Barcelona from outside of the EU, you will need to change your local currency to Euros. You can check out tourist areas like La Rambla or Sagrada Familia. Also, must ATMs accept foreign cards so, you should not have a problem withdrawing cash in Euros. Just be careful about it. There are lots of pickpockets around and do not try to withdraw from crowded areas.

Emergencies

In case of emergency, you can call 112 (police/fire/ ambulance) or 010 for lost or stolen property.
